Install Java on Ubuntu 10 the right way

It’s been a while since my last update on the tech blog, but after I needed to re install Java on my development virtual box running Ubuntu 10, I felt the need to document the process.

Java is one of the most important developments in language constructs that we have. The Programming language originally developed by James Gosling at Sun Microsystems (now a subsidiary of Oracle Corporation) and released in 1995 as a core component of Sun Microsystems’ Java Platform.

Much of Java has a C and C++ syntax but has a nice simple object model. Java applications are typically compiled into byte code (class file) that can be run on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). This is a great benefit to the IT world as it is possible to write once and deploy anywhere structure.

Enough about the background of Java – let’s get to the Install directions.

Open the terminal and run the following commands

$sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sun-java-community-team/sun-java6

$sudo apt-get update

$sudo apt-get install sun-java6

Search the real name of package for Ubuntu 10.10

$sudo apt-cache search java

Afer searching the name of the installer is sun-java6-jre

$sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-bin

You should also mention that once installed, to be used by default one needs to set it to be so..

This is done by running:

$sudo update-java-alternatives -l

(find out the name eg java-6-sun) and then run:

$sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-6-sun

(check the current default java version)

$java -version

That’s pretty much it. Not a difficult process.

Article Submissions for High Link Value and Organic Traffic

Much has been made recently about the need for alternative forms of SEO for gaining some organic traffic to your blog or application web site. Years ago the common form of gaining some traffic was to post a few comments on some high PR (Page Rank) blogs and instantly you got some link juice and traffic. Those days have come essentially to a close. With millions of blogs and sites added on a daily basis, those types of SEO tricks are no longer valid.

Google and the engineers that make the algorithms for search have changed the game. The one last true and tested method for gaining organic traffic and link juice is Article Submission.

It almost goes without saying that being able to write a few words about what you are working on and submitting that to multiple streams of readers is the way that natural SEO works. The proper method steps of working on an article and then submitting that should always include the list of sites that you can also place the content on. Now be certain that you need to do some work with this method. You cannot just re-post the same article over and over without getting a duplicate content hit.

Make sure to change the title and at least 10% of the article in order to make it more suitable for the type of site that you are submitting to.

Let’s be clear that the page rank of the submission site does not necessarily translate to a higher rank for your submission. Go to each and look over what they have to offer and the terms of submissions.

Great Google AdSense Alternatives

It can be said that greatness is deserved by virtue of hard work. Google has proved that both hard work and a considerable investment produces greatness. This has been the bane of all web designers trying to monetize a web site. Google AdSense is the King of monetizing websites. Many alternatives have entered the advertising online space.

The list below is a partial list of some of the alternatives available for web designers and Internet Marketeers. I have personally only used a handful of the companies listed below. My experience has shown that while some are very good at creating wealth, they pale in comparison to AdSense.

I encourage you to give some of them a try. While they will most likely not generate the income that AdSense produces, they are all viable and important in keeping competition alive in the advertising world. Some other factors to consider when choosing an ad serving program is the specific need. What I mean by that is that the ads generally shown by AdSense are closely related to the topic in which you are writing about. This could be a great thing or not so good.

If you are creating content in which you don’t want someone to possibly click on an ad to a competitor then AdSense might not be for you. Most of the others do not serve ads that are too close to the topic of specific page. Some such as AdBrite will just serve advertising that the advertisers in the network want to show. In other words, you don’t have too much say in what is showed. This means that you could have a topic on Travel and AdBrite might serve advertisements on your page about Insurance or Weight Loss.

Don’t discount these ads. Some people actually might be interested in those subjects and at least the click will not send the reader to a competitor!

Social Network Spam or Marketing

I recently read an article from Search Engine Journal that caught my attention. The story was about using Social Media for Marketing purposes by virtue of Google. The search goes as following:

Using the aforementioned search in Google results in a list of users / or members that have an interest in the searched topic. This seems like a great way to find people to send a message for purpose of marketing to them.

The one thing that I question is the spam issue. If you do this research and reach out to Social Users, this is in my mind considered spam. I have received unsolicited messages on LinkedIn and other Social sites and I did at the time consider this spam.

Over the years I have found that what goes around comes around. Now you are thinking what does this have to do with SEO? Well let me tell you… Many years ago there was the natural thinking of when you create a worth while web site or blog you would submit the site to a few heavy traffic web directoris. That was the extnet of the SEO – the traffic would come naturaly. During the past few years a few people started blogging about PageRank and SEO and how you need Text Links to get this PR. Today was a good day. Well that is until it came to figuring out my next strategy for getting some good links coming my way. My first thought was to just find some good sites that contain topics relating to my current project. I came up to one little thing getting in my way – finding the page rank quickly. I know you all are out going to tell me to write a quick API to the google page rank code bank. Problem is I’m kind of lazy today and don’t feel like messing with the translations and math of it all. I just want a quick and dirty way to check that pesky page rank. So a quick search and I find this handy dandy tool.

Changing the Hostname on Ubuntu Linux 8.04 Hardy Heron Safely

Using Google to research some really simple things sometimes gets really hard. Take for example the hostname modification that I needed. My lapse of how to accomplish this made me resort to the king of search, Google. One thing I found was that there were way too many message board results that Google returns – and many with not really a close result that I was searching for. So let me quickly describe for all the simple way that I found for changing the hostname.
First a couple of things.

Make sure you back up the files we will be changing. I Linux every (or most) mistakes are easy to fix, so this step you might find not important.

sudo cp /etc/hosts /etc/hosts.bak && sudo cp /etc/hostname /etc/hostname.bak

With backups made you can now edit the files:

sudo nano /etc/hosts

You should see something like this:
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 old hostname <- this is your prior hostname.

The next file to edit:

sudo nano /etc/hostname

Now reboot.
If everything went well you should have a working system with new names displayed.
Check to see if the hostname is resolved by typing:
sudo hostname

Well that’s it for the hostname.

Coming up with a great domain name for a new online venture has never been easy. Many of the great names are taken ( only talking about .Com’s ) and the rest of them offered for ransom for huge amounts of money. This is capitalism at it’s finest!
